During the Covid-19 crisis it has become a kind of folklore, accepted by both employees and managers, that people working from home are "more productive" than they would be in a workplace. There are no wasted commuter hours and few distractions from others (not counting pets, children and delivery people). However, we found few metrics to support this, and more surprisingly little appetite among senior managers to demand those metrics.
As companies search for a new mixture of workplace and home-based workers, we need something better than untested assumptions. In my experience, often the fastest route to finding a solution is in asking the right questions.
